Choosing the perfect flooring

Key factors when selecting your flooring

With so many types, colours and styles of floor covering, where do you start?  Interior Designer Nichola O’Connell, from our Glenageary/Dun Laoghaire store, guides you through the key factors in finding the best flooring for your needs.

When you choose your flooring it’s crucial to base your selection on your lifestyle as well as the overall look you want to achieve.

So I’d advise you to ask yourself these questions:

Who uses the room or space?

If you have kids that will be eating snacks or dogs running through, you may want to consider
wood or luxury vinyl tile flooring that can be easily wiped down.

What is the main function of the room?

If the room is used mainly for watching TV, or as a space for some downtime, you’re likely to want a cosy feel, so carpet would be a good choice. If you are worried about drink spills, a bleach-cleanable synthetic carpet might be the better option for you.

How much cleaning will the space need?

On a heavy trafficked stairs, for example, a carpet with a stripe or a pattern might be a more practical choice than a plain carpet, and it would also lift what can otherwise could be a dull space. You might even be brave and try bringing in some fun or bold colours!

What is the overall look you want to achieve?

A classic look can be achieved with a nice warm oak wood flooring. You could also try laying the floor in a herringbone pattern to bring some life to the space. You have this, and other laying pattern options, in both wood and Amtico luxury vinyl.

Modern, vintage or ..... ?

If you wanted to go modern, pale white-washed and grey-tone woods have been in fashion for a while now and, like the flooring, their appeal is going to endure.

Rustic or vintage style are two other flooring effects to be seen in many of our wood (laminate and engineered) and Amtico ranges. You can also achieve this look with carpets – try the sisal or Berber styles.

Whatever the overall look and function of your space, we are guaranteed to have something that will suit. Call in and show us any samples of paint, tiles, or fabrics etc you have, and we will help you find the perfect flooring for your home.
